An Eight-Word Love Story
I left this note written on a post-it for Gabrielle this earlier this week on her desk. She was downstairs doing her reading for class, making rice for our take-out-Chinese-food dinner, and I was upstairs finishing up grading a stack of essays. I suddenly felt this sentiment so strongly. Without any mention of my note’s existence, this morning I found her reply on mine. This is...

Four Years of "I Love You"s
Four years ago today (gosh, was it only then?!), I called Gabrielle up on the phone frantically with an urgent matter: I had realized that I was in love with her.

Library Runs
My library runs include a stack of 4-6 audiobooks every month to listen to while in the car during my commute, a mix of canonical literature I never ended up reading, contemporary best sellers that I’ve been meaning to read, ridiculously written chick-lit that’s always entertaining to read, and young adult novels that are good for me read and recommend (or teach) to my students. ...

Pumpkin Patching in Half Moon Bay
After going on four years of living the Bay Area, Gabrielle and I have discovered our share of our favorite regular sweet spots for both everyday and special occasion places. We have our regular donut shop, our regular favorite bar, our regular spot to sit in Dolores Park, our regular Farmer’s Market and Farmer’s Market booths, our regular Christmas tree pick-up corner, and even our...

She Said/She Said: Ten Favorite Photos from Our...
Favorite Vacation Picture #1: Our first part of our vacation started with a house exchange with a family from Sonora, CA. (We’re a part of HomeForExchange.com, and although in the past six months that we’ve been on the site we’ve received probably close to a eighty or ninety offers, this was our first one!) The family that we exchanged with let us know that they just got a...

Currently Contemplating:
-Missing midwestern fall. I want crisp, sunny October days. I want to kick through piles of leaves, in a sweater, on the way to get a cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee.  -Reoccurring thoughts of getting a tattoo. -Grad School: Harder than I was expecting. -Coconut Milk ice cream is a new favorite. Tara, sweetly, bought me the ice cream attachment to our KitchenAid and we finally used it last weekend...

Good Day for the Gays!
1.) Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is over as of 12:01am tonight! 2.) California Supreme Court Chief Judge Ware decided to release the Proposition 8 court tapes so that everyone can see that there’s not a single good reason why gay marriage shouldn’t be legal! 3.) The first transgendered star on Dancing With the Stars is premiering tonight! (Dancing With the Stars has been getting...

Shock and Awe
Appalled at Gabrielle’s secrecy and behavior; we’ve been together for nearly five years and she’s known how to make perfect nutella crepes this whole time!?

Tara: Wanna watch the new Muni fight video with me?
Gabrielle: No thanks, I'm okay.
Tara: It includes a macing and an exposed buttocks...
Gabrielle: Well... alright.

Kitten extravaganza!
We went up to Sonora to do a house exchange for a few nights and there were two TINY kittens at the house, probably around 6 weeks and 9 weeks. I think this was Tara’s ultimate vacation experience…

Door to Door Jesus Salesmen
Two Christians came to my door yesterday while I was still in my bathrobe and slippers. Once it was revealed I was Jewish and in an interfaith relationship, they applauded me for not being so “strict and and set in [my] religious ways” like “most Jews are.” I half smiled, told them thank you, and closed the door. But yep. I’m feeling good ‘cause I guess I have...

Mice.
Amidst all of our packing, from the living room, Gabrielle and I heard a soft rubbling coming from one of the boxes. Gently, the sound scrapped and we heard the tiniest of little scratches, quietly, moving about in what sounded like one of the dozens of cardboard boxes that we picked up from people’s garages. Gabrielle and I, nervous that a mouse had slipped through our door—carried...

Things I Will Miss About Our Old (Tiny) Apartment
- Location! Location! Location! I LOVE our old neighborhood and also the fact that we are next to all of our other favorite neighborhoods! - Our price of rent. (Sadly, what we pay for where we are is a bargain in San Francisco.)  - Our original claw foot tub! So lovely to look at and even lovelier to bathe in! - Our “roof access” that gives us space for wine, watching fireworks, or...

This is Why I Don't Dish Dinner
While serving the rice for dinner, Gabrielle, apparently unhappy with my portion sizes, snapped, “You tryin’ to staaarrrve the butt off of me?!”

We're Moving!
After creating a rental resume, going to ten different open houses and apartment viewings, and sitting down for an hour two-on-one interview in Bernal Heights, Gabrielle and I got the news that we scored the dream Bernal house and we’ll be moving in June 15th!  I have a feeling that our Mission burrito diet is going to be become a Bernal Zantes-heavy one.

Mo' Money? No Problem!
Amazing things are happening! Gabrielle and I are getting recognized for our work! —Financially! (That is to say, we have begun to each make more than each set our parents—a very wonderful, but still kinda sad reality… especially because neither one of us actually makes a lot of money, or at least compared to San Francisco Bay Area standards.) I’ve been wrestling with the...

Reason #243 Why I Love Gabrielle
I woke her up in a rushed panic this morning at 6:10am because I thought I walked through a spider’s web on the way to the bathroom. Even in her sleepy state, she jumped out of bed, did a full body and hair check for the spider; stood by me patiently, bending down to the corner of the hallway as we tried to find it amidst our multi-colored carpeting; and didn’t say a word when we...

Reason #242 Why I Love Gabrielle
When on the phone with an old, fellow home schooled, ex-fundamentalist Christian friend, Gabrielle is able to use both the phrases “listening to Jesus” and “performing a mitzvah” in the same sentence.

Reason #251 Why I Love Gabrielle
When I’m lying in bed with Gabrielle with our bedside table lights still on and the kitty by the foot of our bed and we’re still awake and talking and I remember an awesome idea I had earlier in the day and say something like, “Ooh! I had this really awesome idea for a graphic novel/comic strip! —But you’re going to probably think it’s gross!”… she...

Out
I want to write a post about coming out, both the first time and the many, many times that followed and will continue to occur. And I will write that. But until then…a little Mary Oliver that helped me though (because I’m that gay)… “Wild Geese” You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting. You only have to let...

So/Oh San Francisco.
Natalie: Up for hanging out today? Dinner? Brunch?
Me: Yes! Dinner and drinks? We're heading to the farmers market soon...want to join?
Natalie: Paige is still sleeping, but let's definitely plan on dinner and drinks. Want to go to dinner in Bernal and then Wild Side West for drinks? What about Angkor Borei for dinner, it's Cambodian and looks good. Is that hitting too close to Thai for Tara?
Me: Yeah, I think it might be too close to Thai. What about sushi? There's a place in the Mission that had good Mongolian beef for Paige if she's not feeling sushi.
Natalie: Paige is very skeptical. Would you all be up for some Peruvian? We've been wanting to try Mi Lindo Peru. They have this dessert there that looks yum.
Me: We just had Salvadorian for lunch. What about Indian?
Natalie: Indian sounds yummy. Dosa?
Me: Sounds great.
Natalie: I just looked and I could make a reservation for 9:15 at the earliest...we could have a drink appetizer before? There's a cool wine bar near it.
Me: Awesome.
Oh San Francisco. You're a ridiculously wonderful, beautiful bubble.

Birthday Festivities, Or How Great is Gabrielle?!,...
First off, I should say that I was sick. Kinda dying, kinda on my deathbed sick. I honestly felt like crap. So sick that my boss—someone who told me on the day that I interviewed with him for my position that we “don’t take sick days here”—insisted that I stay home on my birthday, a Friday. This kinda ruined Gabrielle’s plans a bit. First off, she was supposed...
